ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The show was a success! A bunch of people came from as far away as Virginia to rock out. The hardest part by far was getting there with all my gear, and I had help even with that.

I had no idea how One Bit Music was going to pull off an entire set just standing around with a jewel case full of circuitry, but he played live drums the whole time, and it was EXCELLENT! Then Bit Shifter got up and blew up the speakers (literally!) with a fantastic set.
Then it was my turn and the PA’s tweeter was gone – so everything was bassy and there were no highs. Nevertheless, My lighting rig (four RGB LED cans controlled via MIDI, and a green 3D laser) worked flawlessly, choreographed to the music. It flashed at dramatic points, washed the stage during buildups, and simulated everything from lightning to police beacons. I shredded on guitar and went nuts on keys – both at once, as a finale – and having practiced for over 2 months, I didn’t screw up as much as I should have, given how nervous I was.

I got to meet several people who are big in the chip scene, and was surrounded by friends. This sort of positive energy was really, really badly needed, as I’ve been pretty stressed out lately.

One of the songs I played is from a still-unreleased game, so I can’t give it out yet – but here are most of them. This also marks my first releases using two new tools: Little Sound DJ and MML.

  1. Enter the Dragon Theme (VOPM / YM2151)
  2. Bread Command (LSDJ / Gameboy)
  3. Thriller (2A03+VRC6 / S3M) [s3m source]
  4. Dracula Man X2 Alpha Turbo (PC Engine / HuSIC) [mml source] [HES compiled file]
  5. Blast Off Again (Korg OASYS FM, 8 Channels)
  6. FX3 Preview (NES + VOPM)
  7. Katamari Damacy Theme (NES + VRC6) [s3m source]

Hope you enjoy these. I’m back in the studio in a big way now that I’m all settled in, and between my own projects, VGMix development, work, and a few indie projects, I am happily keeping busy.

Thanks so much to everyone who came out and everyone who listens, to Peter (herr_prof) for putting this whole thing together, and to The Tank for having us out there. I can’t wait to do it again.

Anyway,my fav tune looking right now is definatly the capcom/konami castlevania tune. Completlely KICK ASS!!!! Still waiting for you to do a “real arrangement” of it, it would be nice to see if you can play that slap bass for real too ;) Keep up the great work!

Video evidence proves that the tweeters started to blow towards the end of onebitmusic set, so get off of josh’s back ok?

  6. virt 14/04/2006 09:04:43

maybe, but it’s more fun to blame josh because a) nobody’s actually upset about the speakers (i know i’m not, it all ruled anyway) and b) it further cements his reputation as a fucking sonic weapon

heh…this show was pretty off the charts…it was a short show, but everyone did a damn good job with the show and the pa system…it was hard for me to not jump up and get in virt’s face when he played draculaman, that song is the mad note right there..i even pulled 5 or 10 random people off the street into the venue to check it out. hopefully we will get to see more shows out of my boy. great job jake, great job everyone.

I am sure Quincy Jones would be proud to hear his harmony and syncopations shining through such crude production environments. Especially with that Hip Tanaka shout-out at the end! Respect!

I’m listening to the Katamari track right now, and seriously wishing I could have been there.

You said this was a monthly thing… Any idea when this’ll happen in July? Because I’m gonna be in the NYC area on leave to visit a bunch of friends on July 16-23, and I might swing by to catch the show if it happens to coincide.

  19. peter 22/04/2006 07:04:47

checkout the pulsewave site above for show dates… no artists announced yet, but they will be a show around tha time.

Loved your rendition of “Katamari on the Rock” and especially “Thriller”. Even my lady liked it, so I gave her a copy. Glad everything went smoothly besides the speakers. Congratulations, Jake!

Thanks for the Katamari theme! This will get a lot of laughs (nostalgic, feel good about the ol’ NES days type laughs) at my next game night.
