If anyone out there is a fan or former user of Impulse Tracker but has moved on due to its being a bitch to get working in XP/2k, this is the best news.
If anyone used to visit Efnet #trax back in the day, the main contributor (it’s open-source) is mrsbrisby, who is a hideously amazing programmer. He needs feedback, bug reports, and suggestions — keeping in mind that this is supposed to be IT, not a “sequel” with thousands of new features like renoise or madtracker.
Also very exciting for IT users: reViSiT, which is an Impulse Tracker workalike VST instrument. You can use it to either trigger MIDI or be an encapsulated sampler within your songs in any VST host. If there were a perfect bridge for trackers who are hesitant to give up the precision and control of the old spreadsheet interface, but want to work in a traditional sequencing environment, this is definitely it.
Please support these projects, which are both unfinished but seriously impressive. Fasttracker 2 wanks have had their workalikes for years, it’s our turn now!
As a Fastracker 2 Wank, I want to know what workalike there would be to this “reViSiT”, should there ever exist one.
I haven’t heard of any either, but i guess this impulsetrackerthingy running under windows is good news enough, since there aren’t any good FT2 clones under windows.. Since I still do chiptunes, getting used to an IT-like interface is worth it :)
wow that’s hot stuff, I bought renoise some months ago, but that one is good old times, and it even runs under osx just what I need thanks :)
Holy crap, I miss Impulse Tracker… once I get back home I’ll be downloading this sucker straight onto my computer.
What about Mad Tracker? I believe it to be a good clone of FT2, and it recently has added support for VST plugins, and is an excellent tracker, I have used it for years.
I remember modedit…
Heeey What’s wrong with FTII ? ;)
Gonna check these one out though, thanks for the heads up!
You guys should check http://www.renoise.com – renoise is a deadly windows software that is VERY similar to FT2. I grew up on FT2 and so did the developers. Its got all the shortcut keys and the learning curve if you already know FT2 is like an anthill..
Dope music virt. Could you email me if you get a chance – ive got a couple questions to ask you…
Some things that aren’t obvious:
* Schism is Free Software (in the GNU sense).
* Schism looks, acts, and feels like IT. Put it in classic mode if you’re still not fooled into thinking that it _is_ IT.
* Schism can run on every modern platform.
* Schism can control MIDI equipment (including softsynths)
* Schism can act as a MIDI synthesizer.
* Schism can live-record from MIDI controllers.
* Schism can speak MIDI over Ethernet.
* Schism is here now. It’s not vapor. You can use it, and it works. You can write with it.
Yes, but what I really want is Schism’s fidelty to IT2, only with VST instrument and effect support. That’s the dream.
